It isn’t really remembered all that well, but that’s not too surprising with the period it released. That's just how absurd it is now.Īnd f*ck the downvoters. Quake 4 was the last game with a proper single player campaign in the franchise, and the game that perfectly defined the gory, biopunk obsessed menace of the Strogg. idS didn't even attempt to walk out of the FPS genre to create an RTS, Strogg vs GDF, with even more units. The Strogg have a very fiendish and raw take on the modern warfare combat style with combined arms that makes them special. It's idS' fault that it hasn't been properly exploited. Playing it with Sikkmod with Quake 2 physics and crouch sliding is good times, but the 60fps lock makes me cry. The future of the solo id shooter is assured: although there’s no campaign DLC on the table for Doom, the studio know exactly how extraordinary a return. I have a recent appreciation for crouch sliding that makes the game quite fun. Quake 4: Hated this game when it came out. Let's be honest, looking at all the bad guys created in video games since the last thirty years, the Strogg have evolved and have a very distinctive style and background. Quake 1 great single player mods, Quake 3 great competitive mods, but Quake 2 is where the lan partys at IMO. It wasn't a neon spamfest like the Marvel cape shit.Īnd as for the Strogg, I would be remiss not to quote Civvie 11 on the matter: "who gives a fuck about the Strogg?" Quake was really toned down, pretty much like the Lord of the Rings movies. The remaster provides too much creative leeway in the palette that can be used for all sorts of effects. But the true original Quake was technically limited and this also contributed to its identity. Quake 1 you play for both, + all the new user created levels. The game sold though because the company has the means to commercially support a good enough to very good game. Quake 2 & 4 you play for the single player campaign. Doom Eternal was already on the verge of having gone one step too far and some world designs really seemed out of place according to some reviews and players. As I said elsewhere, it would be moving too much into the World of Warcraft realm of cartoonish takes on gothic and medieval moods. Its multiplayer component may not break any new ground, but as a single player experience Quake 4 is a winner. Mind you, I'd be afraid of idS venturing into very garish colored environments as a move to bring more world variety to Quake. 1 Plot 2 Levels 2.1 Act 1: Gaining a Foothold 2.2 Act 2: Operation Advantage 2.3 Act 3: Kane of the Strogg 2.4 Act 4: Operation Last Hope 2.5 Act 5: Confrontation 3 Multiplayer 4 Appearances 4.1 Enemies 4.2 Weapons 4.3 Singleplayer Levels 4. Quake 4 is fun, frantic and a definite step-up from the dour Doom 3. Like, yes, visuals and atmosphere were distinct at the time but how many people are clamouring for brown and gray mix of Lovecraftian and Satanic aesthetics? It's a niche for sure.ĭark Souls' aesthetics would not seem very mainstream either.
